It gained political independence in 1960 after a movement led by a cocao farmer – turned politician Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Felix - the son of a Baoulé chief - formed the country's first agricultural trade union for African cocoa farmers like himself. The Côte d'Ivoire benefited greatly from this independence and made felix president. For a time productivity soared and the country prospered.
