Help with the Principality of Monaco?

I was just thinking about why Monaco is a principality, so I thought of Wales, the son/daughter of the king/queen of England is the prince/princess of Wales, so then I thought maybe the son of the King of France was the Prince of Monaco [back when France had the monarchy], was it (is it?) something like that?
